With the poorest safety record of any UK industry, farming sadly suffered 18 times more fatalities last year than the national average. According to Farming UK, as a result, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is calling for ‘new attitudes’ on how farmers can reduce on-farm injuries and fatalities.
The HSE’s programme of inspections will review safety standards across the UK and the industry should be reminded that the inspections will soon begin. They will focus on ensuring that those responsible for protecting themselves and other workers are doing the right things to comply with health and safety law, thus preventing death, injury and ill-health.
Inspectors will be checking that risks are being controlled within areas containing machinery, potential falls from height, children and livestock with a view that injuries in farming are not inevitable and that in order to control risks, those working in the industry need to develop a better understanding of the risk they face and the simple ways they can be managed.
