Working at height accounts for 11% of safety incidents on major public works, according to figures compiled from four of the UK’s most high-profile public works construction projects (PCB Today).
Of the 538 non-fatal reported accidents across the four projects; HS2 Ltd, Sellafield Ltd, Highways Englands M1-M6 works and Network Rail’s Crossrail, 56 were as a result of working at height. Thankfully, there were no fatalities. However, many of the aforementioned accidents would have been preventable with the usage of correct fall arrest products.
As the government releases £200m to replace Grenfell-style cladding from circa 166 privately-owned high rise buildings, working at height is likely to be intensified across the country over the next few months.
