The World Day for Safety and Health at Work is an annual international campaign to promote safe, healthy and decent work. Held on 28th April this year, the event has been recognised by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) since 2003.
The world day this year attempts to take stock of 100 years of work by the ILO in improving occupational safety and health, looking to the future for the continuation of improved safety through technology, demographics, sustainable development and changes in the work organisation i.e. the work culture.
With the construction industry accounting for the greatest number of workplace injuries across the UK and with Farming, Civil Engineering and Manufacturing close behind, it’s important to incorporate a safety culture whereby governments, employers and workers all actively participate in securing a safe health and healthy environment. According to the UN, this can be achieved through a system of defined rights, responsibilities and duties and where the highest priority is focussed on the principle of prevention.
